Very Rev. Jonathan Robinson RIP

wmgrmeekingpererobinsonPlease pray for the repose of the soul of Fr Jonathan Robinson, the Provost and founder of the Oratory in Toronto who died on Wednesday. The Oratory was erected in Montreal in 1975 moving a few years later to Toronto. The community runs a seminary with an excellent reputation for philosophical and theological study. Many priests in North America and England owe their formation to him. Fr Robinson also wrote a number of very influential books and was unsparing in supporting communities throughout the English-speaking world.

Fr Robinson's inspiration was rooted in a long-standing friendship with the Oratory in England. His first contact with the Oratory came in the 1950s when he was doing a doctorate in philosophy at the University of Edinburgh. He visited the Birmingham Oratory at the invitation of the Newman scholar Fr Stephen Dessain and became a regular and popular visitor to the community.

Later he became a frequent visitor to the London Oratory having become a close friend of the Provost of the London Oratory, Fr Michael Napier. They had known each other from their student days in Rome. He will be much missed by the brethren of his own community and the wider Oratorian world.
