St Charles Lwanga and companions. Died 1886. ~ Charles was employed as “Master of the Pages” in the court of King Mwanga of Uganda. The king hated Catholics and exiled Charles and fourteen of the young Catholic pages to Namugango. During the journey, three of the party were murdered. Charles, the others and two soldiers were burnt to death. Over one hundred people were killed during the king’s persecution. They are known as “The Martyrs of Uganda”. All were canonised in 1964 by Pope Paul VI.
