St Luke the Evangelist
1st century ~ Author of the 3rd Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles, Luke, from Antioch in Syria, is believed to have been a convert to Christianity. It is also reported that Luke was a doctor as St Paul referred to him as “My beloved physician” Colossians 4:14 He met Paul and accompanied him on his second and third missionary travels and was with Paul when he was arrested and imprisoned in Rome. After Paul was martyred, it is understood, Luke travelled to Greece, Italy, Macedonia and France to preach the Word of the Lord.
It is uncertain, but he is thought to have been one of Christ's seventy disciples even though he is unlikely to have met Jesus. Luke was also said to be a talented painter of portraits, but no proof of this exists.
He died at Boetia aged 84 years old and is the Patron Saint of doctors, surgeons, painters and sculptors.
