St Joseph, Husband of Mary.
1st C. ~ The facts we know of St Joseph are taken from the Gospels of St Matthew and St Luke. In Luke 4:22-23, it confirms Joseph as the father of Jesus.
He was the perfect father for Jesus; he came from Bethlehem, was a descendant of the House of Judah, and was obedient, honest and kind. Joseph was a carpenter by trade and he became betrothed to Mary, whom he discovered was pregnant. At first, he thought he may have to renounce his betrothal, when God told him in a vision that Mary’s baby was conceived through the Holy Spirit and he should marry Mary, take her home and care for her. Being obedient, he did exactly as he was told.
He was with Mary when she gave birth to Jesus and he moved his family to Nazareth and worked as a carpenter there. When Herod announced he was going to kill every newborn baby boy, Joseph took Mary and Jesus to Egypt to avoid the massacre. They came back to Nazareth, but after Jesus’ twelfth birthday, Joseph is not mentioned again. It is believed he had died before the crucifixion, as he was much older than Mary.
He is the patron saint of fathers, families and carpenters.
