St Matthew, the Apostle. 1st C ~ Born in Galilee, son of Alpheus, Matthew worked as a tax collector for the Roman government in Capharnaum. Matthew 9:9-13 Jesus called Matthew to be one of his twelve Apostles Mark 2:14. He was the writer of the first Gospel around the years 60-90. After the ascension of Jesus, he preached in Judea and was thought to have travelled eastwards to either Ethiopia or Persia, where he was martyred. He is the patron saint of tax men, accountants, bookkeepers and bankers.
