St Timothy.
Died 97 ~ Timothy was born in Lycaonia, Asia Minor (now part of Turkey) His father was a Greek and his mother a Jew, named Eunice. Details of his childhood are not really known. St Paul came to Lycaonia to preach and Eunice was one of the many he converted. It is thought Paul probably baptised Timothy. When Paul came back to Lycaonia some years later, Timothy became a close friend and helper of Paul. He travelled with him on his visits to Macedonia and Greece. Paul gave Timothy the job of looking after the Christians who were living around Ephesus (in ancient Greece) and Timothy became the first bishop of that city. Paul wrote Timothy two letters, which are part of the New Testament. The first was sent from Macedonia and the second one was probably written from his prison cell in Rome. Timothy was martyred in the year 97, about thirty years after Paul’s death. Because he objected to a pagan festival taking place, the marchers in the possession beat him to death with the idols they were carrying, but some accounts say he was stoned to death.
