St Irenaeus.
125-203. ~ Irenaeus was born in Smyrna (which is now part of Turkey). He received a good education in his youth and when he grew up, he socialised with men who knew the Apostles and this greatly influenced him. It is said that St Polycarp was one of his acquaintances. He travelled on missionary work to Lyons in France and was made the bishop of Lyons on the death of the previous bishop.
