Notes of Parish Forum held on Sunday 11th May 2003 at 3.30pm in the Upper Room

Canon Michael welcomed all present and the meeting began with Scripture and prayer.

The issue of missalettes at Mass was discussed at some length. Some felt that they were a great help especially if the reader was inaudible. Others expressed the view that they listen more carefully now that we do not have the sheets distracting them. It was stressed that the Church encourages us to listen to the Word as it is proclaimed. It was suggested that people read the Sunday Readings at home to prepare for the Sunday Mass. Canon Michael felt that all things considered especially because of our weekly meetings with Readers and a good amplification system it was best to continue our current practice.

Finance

Our parish Refurbishment Account stands at £175,944- well over halfway to our goal of £300,000. The Parish Account balance to the end of April is £27,894.

It was asked if the parish had made any approach to the Diocese questioning the large increase in our parish assessment. Canon assured the gathering that he had written to the Diocesan Secretary and was waiting a response. The question was asked about the accountability of the full-time employees of the Diocese for such jobs as education, child protection etc. Assurance was given that there is a vigorous supervision at Diocesan level.

Ongoing Formation

The Spirituality Course at St Bede's Pastoral Centre was mentioned and the four talks starting on Tuesday 17 June on Adult Formation - details in newsletter. Relatively few people have been attending the previous Adult Formation talks and Canon encouraged all present to make an effort to attend.

St Margaret Clitherow Shrine

The flat above has now become vacant. Discussion took place as the question of developing the top floor so as to make it a more attractive proposition for a prospecitive tenant. Canon will report progress at the next meeting.

Ecumenism

Canon Michael encouraged attendance at June Alpha Course at St Michael le Belfry. Nicky Gumbel and his team from Holy Trinity, Brompton will leading it.

A suggestion was made that occasionally we could share refreshments with local Churches following our 9am Services. Angela Breffit will look into this venture.

Social Scene

Many activities are planned for the coming months - Strawberry Fayre, Sponsored Walk, Refreshments served from the Upper Room monthly during summer. Our next event is the Fiesta Mexicana on 17 May in the school.

Spirituality

A Gospel Challenge Weekend is planned for 10-12 October 2003. It is hoped that a viable number of people will book in.

The Forum concluded at 5.00pm.

Date of next Forum - To Be Confirmed.
