This is the gate of heaven!
The first reading at Mass today is from the Book of Genesis and describes Jacob's dream of the ladder stretching up to heaven, with the angels of God ascending and descending. Upon awakening, Jacob exclaimed, "How terrible is this place! This is nothing less than the house of God: this is the gate of heaven!"
We should have the same awe-struck reverence when entering our churches, which are places where the Lord is present more really than at Bethel. Our tabernacles are the House of God. The sacrifice of the Mass is the ladder which reaches up to heaven. The angels congregate above our altars in adoration and wonder.
The architect Sir Ninian Comper wrote, "A church should pray of itself with its architecture. It is its own prayer and should bring you to your knees when you enter."
